Granule loss

By Updated

When the mineral granules coating asphalt shingles wash or wear off, exposing the asphalt underneath to sun and water and speeding up the roof's aging.

Granules in the gutters, bare or dark patches on shingles, and scuffed spots after a hailstorm are all signs of granule loss. Large areas of it are one of the signs that a roof is wearing out.
